Aleksei Guerman
Born: 20 June 1938 (Leningrad/St.Petersburg)
Son of the Russian writer Yuri Guerman, Alexei graduated from the Alexander Ostrovsky Institute for Dramatic Arts Theatre in Leningrad and made his first picture, The Seventh Companion (w/Gregori Aronov), for Lenfilm Studios in 1967. He is a prolific actor and writer, and though his directorial output has been limited-- by finances, production difficulties, and censorship-- each of Guerman's four films (as well as Amirkulov's Fall of Otrar, which he co-wrote) has had a significant impact on international cinema. From Checkpoint to Khrustalyov, My Car! (a visceral tour de force that continues to grow in reputation), Guerman's films are uncompromisingly human.
