Plot synopsis
The Ugly Duckling,
is a modern reworking of Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale that is both
amusing and sad at the same time in the director’s typical manner. In this
large-scale production, which took several years to complete, the director
employed many of his tried-and-tested techniques, which include the use
of plasticine, puppets and more than four hundred dolls. As was the case
in Bardin’s previousmovies, the music became an indispensable part of the
story. The soundtrack is made up fromexcerpts fromballets byTchaikovsky
that were specially arranged by the composer Sergey Anashkin and performed
by the world-renowned orchestra of Vladimir Spivakov, while
many famous Russian musical artistes agreed to voice the movie, including
Spivakov himself, and members of the Jewish Choir of Michael Turetsky,
which is very popular in Russia.
