The film is about the horrors of war. It tells the story of tailor John Bottom, who during the war against the Germans lost an arm and died, but was buried with a carpenter's arm. John's earthly suffering continues after his death... John's unfortunate ghost cannot accept this mistake, because he is a tailor! and his beloved Mary will not be able to recognize him if he has someone else's arm... The apostle Peter does not have the means to change the order established in heaven and John will remain alone in paradise too.
Mary's tears and John's supplications are part of a musical suite: the poem is written in the style of the old English ballad.
