Biography
Mikhail Svetlov, whose real name was Mikhail Arkadyevich Sheinkman, was born on June 17, 1903, in Ekaterinoslav (now Dnipro, Ukraine), into a modest Jewish family. From an early age, he was confronted with the social and political upheavals of early 20th-century Russia, growing up in a climate marked by revolutionary tensions that would have a lasting influence on his work and worldview.

As a teenager, Mikhail Svetlov actively engaged in the revolutionary movement. He joined the Bolshevik ranks during the Russian Civil War, an experience that deeply nourished his poetry. This period shaped in him an ideal of social justice and a sensitivity to human destinies caught in the great upheavals of history. From his earliest writings, he established himself as a distinctive lyrical voice, blending romanticism, heroism, and a certain melancholy.

In the 1920s, he began publishing his poems in Soviet newspapers and journals. He quickly gained recognition thanks to works such as Grenada (1926), a poem that became emblematic of Soviet revolutionary poetry. In this text, he expresses the internationalist impulse and the idealism of younger generations ready to fight for a universal cause. His accessible and musical poetry appealed to a wide audience, especially the youth.

Unlike some of his contemporaries, Mikhail Svetlov managed to navigate with a certain caution within the framework of socialist realism imposed by the Soviet regime. Without being a dissident, he retained a personal tone, sometimes tinged with irony and tenderness. He also wrote for theater and cinema, contributing to popular works that were part of official Soviet culture while maintaining a human dimension.

During the Second World War, he worked as a war correspondent. This experience reinforced the gravity of his writing and deepened his perspective on human suffering and everyday courage. His war poems reflect sincere patriotism, but also a clear-eyed compassion for individuals caught in the violence of conflict.

After the war, Mikhail Svetlov continued to publish. He received several distinctions, including the Lenin Prize (awarded posthumously in 1967), which confirmed the importance of his work within the Soviet canon.

Mikhail Svetlov died on September 28, 1964, in Moscow.

Today, he is recognized as one of the most representative poets of the Soviet revolutionary generation. His work embodies both the hopes, illusions, and contradictions of an era marked by profound upheavals.

In the field of cinema, in addition to a film script, he left song lyrics for several films, including some animated films.
