In 1942 Tanya, the main character of the film, is sent to Germany under number 217 together with the next batch of Soviet people driven there. She found herself in the family of Krauss, a grocer, who exploited Sergey Ivanovich, a Soviet mathematician, as a janitor. Helping each other they dreamed of escape and return to their motherland in spring. The death of Sergey Ivanovich, murdered by master’s son Max and his friend Kurt, determined her to revenge his death and fight for freedom.
