The story of the film is based on a Russian tale of the same name. Once upon a time there was a nice young girl named Nastienka. Her nasty mother-in-law wanted to get rid of her and leave the best choice of fiancés to her own daughter Marfushka. That's why she sent Nastienka in the dead of winter to the forest, to die there from the cold. But the Morozko (Father Frimas) helped Nastienka and her lover Ivan to overcome all the trials and find each other.
