After several years in the USA, Katia, married to an American and mother of a child, returns to Russia to find her daughter Lena, abandoned ten years ago in an orphanage, and to make a film about her mother, who died in mysterious circumstances. Lena is to play her young grandmother in the film. But the project runs into unexpected difficulties.
