The action takes place in the post-war Soviet Union. Five years after the end of the war, Natka still has no news of her fiancé Ivan who had gone to the front. She continues to wait for him. But Semion begins to court her. And Natka ends up marrying him. It is then that Ivan returns after being a prisoner of the Germans and then sent to a Soviet camp.
