Tassia goes to Leningrad to take the entrance exam to the pedagogical institute. She meets Marak who also dreams of becoming a teacher. She is accepted but he is not. Tassia begins her studies at the institute and helps the young man prepare for the entrance exam. Vovka, a little thug placed under Marak's tutelage, has run away from home. Marak and Tassia, joined by the latter's mother, set out to find the boy.
