The film is set during the Second World War. Doctor Khaïnal (Milko Gabor) is not involved in politics. He considers that his profession as a doctor obliges him to remain neutral. However, the events unfolding in the country and his encounter with a Soviet ‘scout’ (Tatiana Samoïlova), with whom he falls in love, lead him to understand that a man of honour cannot remain on the sidelines when the fight for freedom and justice is at stake.
