A dreamy boy Alyosha lives with his father on a farm. Their mother left them several years ago, but Alyosha continues to love her; the boy thinks that she looks like the woman in blue whom he saw in the old portrait. Since early childhood, Alyosha has dreamed of building a hot air balloon and flying on it. He tells his new friends about this - the girl Tanya and her grandmother, who live in a holiday village. The three of them make a balloon, but the resulting fire destroys it. Tanya leaves for the city, and her grandmother helps Alyosha fulfill his dream - they make a small ball out of tissue paper, and it flies into the sky.
