The reign of Peter I, the very beginning of the 18th century. A young serf guy, Ivan Starshov, is madly in love with Princess Maria. But due to the difference in social status, their marriage is impossible. Due to a personal tragedy, the serf loses faith in God: what kind of god is this who cannot connect him with the girl he loves? Ivan leaves his native village and joins the Preobrazhensky Regiment. The serf becomes a participant in the great victories of the army and a witness to the global reforms carried out by Peter I. Ivan categorically disagrees with the fact that, having been born a serf, he should remain in this status until the end of his days. He believes he is capable of more. And he proves it, in the name of love.
