Sacha, a young peasant girl, arrives in Moscow and gets lost in the city. Pépelniak, the traffic cop who Sacha asks several times for directions, takes pity on her and takes her to the police station. Most of the police officers adopt Sacha who becomes their housekeeper. But the only militiaman who is hostile to her discovers that she has left her husband and will have to answer for his attitude before the judges. Sacha leaves the police station but Pépelniak takes her into his home, where he lives with his wife and their baby. On the day of the trial, he will go to plead on Sacha's behalf.
