The film tells the story of the last years of the family of Tsar Nicholas II. Panfilov himself said about his film: "When you have been brought up all your life with the idea that the last emperor was terrible and bloodthirsty, because that's what they put into our heads at school, it's a shock to find out the opposite. That's what I want to show in this film. Even if he made mistakes, including not giving Russia the Constitution it should have had. Because the country should have become a constitutional monarchy!"
