Biography
Darejan Omirbaev was born on March 15, 1958 in the village of Uyuk, Jambul region, Kazakhstan. In 1980 he graduated from the Faculty of Applied Mathematics in Alma-Ata (Kazakhstan). In 1983 he began studying at VGIK (State Institute of Cinematography) in Moscow in the Soloviev chair. He graduated in 1987.
He then became a film critic in the editorial office of the magazine Novy film, before directing Childe his second short film, in 1988. He then directed Kairat (1991), his first feature film, Silver Leopard and Fipresci Prize in Locarno, Silver Montgolfière at the Festival des Trois Continents in Nantes, Grand Prix and Prix de Criticism in Strasbourg; then Kardiogramma (1995) Official Competition in Venice and Special Jury Prize at the Festival des Trois Continents in Nantes. Tueur à Gages (1998) is his third feature film.
