In 1898 he studied at the Faculty of Law of St. Petersburg University.
From 1904 to 1906 he worked at the Moscow Art Theatre. In 1905 he took part in the experiment of K. Stanislavsky and V.S. Meyerhold called "Studio on Povarskaya".
In 1906 he moved to the Maly Theatre.
In 1909 he toured with the troupe of N.N. Sinelnikov in Yekaterinodar, in 1910 on the stage of the Nezlobin Theatre he played Armand Duval in "The Lady of the Camellias" by A. Dumas fils. In 1911 he returned to the Maly Theatre, where he served until 1918.
In 1918, in Petrograd, Maksimov participated in the creation of the Bolshoi Drama Theatre and became one of its leading actors.
In 1924, he left the Bolshoi Drama Theatre and became an actor at the National Theatre of the People's House for a short time; in 1925-1926, he performed on the stage of the Comedy Theatre as a partner of Elena Granovskaya. Later, he performed on stage as a narrator and participated in circus performances.
Vladimir Maksimov was one of the most popular actors of silent cinema. He made his film debut in 1910 (Vasily Goncharov's Midnight at the Cemetery) and played more than sixty roles in total. Called "King of the Screen", he was one of the first to bring theatrical culture to cinema.
Since 1924 - professor at the Leningrad Institute of Performing Arts.
