Honored Artist of the RSFSR (1957). As a child, he worked as a projectionist's assistant, designed advertising posters for films and was a chorister at the opera, where he also did artistic design. He graduated from the Petrograd Art School. He worked as an illustrator in the publishing houses "Rainbow" and "Young Guard". In 1933-41 he worked as an animator, then as a director at the Leningrad film studio "Rosfilm" (later "Lenfilm"). He taught animator courses at Lenfilm. Takes part in the Great Patriotic War. From 1942 he worked at Soyuzmultfilm.
