Born in Riga.
Graduated from the Faculty of Journalism at the University of Latvia. Worked in television.
Graduated from the Higher Courses of Social Studies in 1971.
Worked at the Riga Film Studio, where he made over a hundred documentaries.
Won the Big Kristaps award five times.
His diptych about Sergei Eisenstein gained worldwide renown.
He has won over 10 international prizes and awards: Oberhausen 1973 for "Knight's Move"; Nancy 1986 for "I Am Latvian"; and sports film festivals in Italy, France, and Hungary (1989, "Olympic Hive"), among others.
In 1993, he became head of the film directing department at the Latvian Academy of Culture.
