Plot synopsis
As in almost all fairy tales, there is a beautiful young girl. Her name is Aigul, and she has a voice that capsizes the hearts of the simple people in the village where she lives. Her father works the land gently, her mother does not do much, and her grandmother seems to spend her days sleeping. But Aigul sees her own life in the city, she would become a singer, far from her Kazakh countryside. One day, she meets a little mustachioed man on a bicycle who offers to take her with him, to make her meet celebrity. But she will have to convince her parents, and be on time for the meeting. A whimsical musical comedy, a tale of country life, Dreamistan is also located where the lives of millions of young girls around the world are played out, whose dreams confront the will of family and traditions. As she leaves childhood, what is sweet Aigul waiting for? A life that belongs to her, guided by her own choices. But what will she find? “Dreamistan,” the land of dreams? Or the simple reality: a marriage, a farm, children, a plot of land, and an existence identical to that of her parents? By asking the question to his non-professional actors, in the middle of Kazakhstan, an isolated country in a confluence of traditional cultures, Ilysov anchors his timeless fable in today’s world. Behind the veil of warm colors, Dreamistan becomes a story of intimacy, and in this way, becomes totally universal. (VTA)
