"Other Shores" is a bit like searching for lost time, because the story of the director Marina Tsurtsumia is closely linked to the history of Gagra, a small town in Abkhazia, on the Black Sea, the former Soviet Riviera. Created by Prince Alexander of Oldenburg, this seaside resort, very popular during the time of the tsars as well as under the Soviet regime, thanks to its subtropical climate, suffered greatly from the civil war of 1989-1993, when Georgian families were expelled from their homes by the separatists. Today, despite the degradations, the town retains a magical charm; a skillful montage of old photos and current views presents it through the family documents of the director.
