The film "The Forest" is one of the parts of the project "The Empire of Darkness" which includes three other films: "Don, patrons and worshipers", "Between ourselves we arrange" and "Mad Money". The project is interesting not only for a new reading of these proverbial comedies but also for the opportunity to discover great theater actors unknown to the majority of cinema spectators. The comedy "The Forest" was written by Ostrovsky in 1870. The first productions were made by the Alexandrinsky Theater in St. Petersburg on November 1 and by the Maly Theater in Moscow on November 26, 1871. It was adapted for the cinema in 1953 by the director Vladimir Vengerov.
