Plot synopsis
Artur Sergeevich Lurie (real name Naum Izrailevich Luria) is one of the most famous futurist composers of the Russian avant-garde of the early 20th century.
Born in the Mogilev region (Belarus) in 1892, he spent his childhood in Odessa and studied at a commercial school there. He immediately moved to Saint Petersburg, where he entered the conservatory, which he left before finishing his studies. He then began to play in the famous cafe "Brodiatchaia sobaka" where painters, poets and other artists met. It was then that he met the poet Anna Akhmatova and their romantic relationship began.
In the early 1920s, Lurie fell in love with Olga Grebova and for some time Artur, Anna and Olga lived together. Lurie set Anna's poems to music and Anna dedicated poems to him.
In 1922 Artur moved to Berlin where he hoped in vain that Anna would come to join him. Anna then married the futurist Punin, with whom she lived for 15 years.
Artur was deported for his leftist views, but returned to Paris thanks to Stravinsky's support. At the start of the Second World War, he emigrated to the United States where he remained until the end of his life (1966).
At the end of the 1950s, the Iron Curtain was becoming less opaque and Artur was able to receive poems from Anna and even hear recordings. In 1963, he wrote to her but did not receive a response. Anna died in March 1966 and Artur 6 months later. Since then, Anna Akhmatova has become more and more famous, while Artur Lurié has fallen into oblivion.
