During a week of four Thursdays, the son of Tsar Avdei, also called Avdei, is born. On the same day, the Tsar's steward Varvava gives birth to a boy and a third little boy is found in a cabbage. The three boys are given the name Ivan and are kept in the palace to be raised together. But Varvara does not see it that way: she has the Tsarevich and the abandoned child kidnapped and claims that the only one to have survived is the Tsarevich whom she has replaced with her own son.
