Plot synopsis

The orphan Adele Weisekind goes to a university town to study. She meets an old acquaintance, student Rafail Edelgerts. The young people soon fall in love. But Adele is denied resident’s rights by the police. The only possible solution for Adeleis to register as a prostitute. Suddenly Adele is arrested on suspicion of robbery. Adele falls ill with nervous fever and dies. Left with no aim in life, Rafail wanders aong the streets and finally goes to visit the grave of his beloved. The thought that she is no longer alive, shatters the young man. He falls unconscious onto the grave and dies frozen during the night.
