Plot synopsis
Vyrine and his daughter Dounia run an isolated post house. Impressed by the beauty of the young girl, Company Commander Minski pretends to be ill to stay for a while and bribes the doctor called to his bedside. Vyrine takes care of his guest with devotion. On the day of departure, the hussar offers Dounia to accompany him to the chapel. The carriage does not stop and the old man waits in vain for his daughter to return. He leaves for Saint Petersburg. But Minski refuses to release Dounia who has become a courtesan. Vyrine returns alone and in despair. One evening when he has drunk a lot, he goes out, thinking he sees Dounia, and perishes in the snow and cold.
