The steward Vasilkov and his only daughter Olya live in the old estate of a landowner, Reneva, who has been living abroad for a long time. Olya is madly in love with a neighboring landowner, Robachev, who loves her in return. The lovers are happy until Reneva returns to live at the estate. One day, the bored widow overhears an intimate moment between Robachev and Olya. She then decides to make the young man fall in love with her. Reneva manages to attract the attention of Robachev, who courts her. Olya suffers in silence and seems to have lost all hope. Reneva and Robachev go for a boat ride. Witnessing a love scene between them, the unfortunate Olya throws herself into the river and drowns before the astonished eyes of Reneva and Robachev.
