In 1960 he graduated from the acting department of the Yerevan Art and Theater Institute.
In 1971 he graduated from the directing department of VGIK (workshop of Efim Dzigan).
Since 1971 he has been a director at "Armenfilm" movie theater.
The younger brother of the People's Artist of the USSR Frunze Mkrtchyan (1930-1993).
