The romance between Elena, the governor’s daughter, and the ambitious civil servant Lotaryov comes to an abrupt end when she discovers his relationship with her mother. Elena leaves, becomes a village schoolteacher and joins forces with opposition youth. When Lotaryov bails Elena out of prison following her arrest, she marries him. Nevertheless, a gulf lies between her and her husband — her revolutionary activities.
