A musical comedy.
Based on Rodion Shchedrin’s opera *Not Just Love*.
The relationships between the film’s main characters are portrayed in a deliberately abstract manner; their conflicts are merely hinted at. The feelings that unexpectedly flare up in Varvara Vasilyevna — the collective farm chairwoman — for the newcomer Volodenka, Natasha’s girlish infatuation with him, and their brief and fleeting encounter are reflected in the folk songs—mocking and melancholic—sung by the village girls, as if summarising the events unfolding.
