Plot synopsis
‘Why bring poverty upon yourselves?’ — this is a question often posed to Anatoly and Elena Zagrush, parents of 14 children. In modern society, it is no longer the norm to have a large family, yet the global birth rate is falling as the world’s population ages. By following the lives of our protagonists, we will gain an insight into their family life. They live on Lake Baikal and get on well together; the children are hard-working and help one another, earning a living by picking berries, but the family faces prejudice because of their large family. The film aims to show that having many children does not necessarily mean poverty, but is an example of a fulfilling life, where children are given opportunities and grow up to be independent.
