The NEP years. Six-year-old Grisha Kalabukhov's parents pay little attention. The boy wants to follow his older brother's example and join the Octobrists, but the Pioneer organization refuses, considering Grisha too young. At the same time, they in absentia accept the then-popular American actor Jackie Coogan, Grisha's peer, as an honorary Octobrist. Wanting to see the lucky boy so popular with the Young Pioneers, Grisha goes to the cinema. From then on, he begins imitating Jackie Coogan. A circus eccentric, mistaking the boy for a street child, takes him on as an apprentice. Grisha's adventures follow one after another. From the circus, he finds himself among the street children, and from them, back to the circus...
