The works of this sculptor are striking in their lifelike quality, as if one were contemplating a living being rather than a marble statue: Ivan the Terrible, Peter the Great, Nestor the Chronicler, Christ... The emotions, physical appearance and character of the figures are rendered with exquisite precision. And although the sculptor spent much of his life outside Russia, Russia always remained in his heart, which is evident in the vast majority of Mark Antokolski's works of genius.
