Plot synopsis
A small town in old Russia. A worker's son, Fedya, is constantly feuding with "Little Angel" Tolya, the son of the office manager. One day, Fedya receives a fifty-kopeck piece from his father. When one of Fedya's friends, Posmityukha, gets into trouble, his cap ends up in the hands of the office manager. Fedya rescues his friend, "buying" the cap back with the fifty-kopeck piece his father gave him. When the ice melts, "Little Angel" Tolya ends up in the river. Risking his life, Fedya saves his "sworn enemy" and even helps him get home. At home, "Little Angel" comes to and complains to his father that Fedya is to blame for everything. After a forced swim in the icy water, Fedya falls ill. His mother goes to the office manager, asking for financial assistance for her son's treatment, and receives... a fifty-kopeck piece. Upon learning of this, Fedya throws the money away. A friend of Posmityukha accidentally finds the fatal piece. When Fedya recovers, Posmityukha gives his friend... a fifty-kopeck piece.
The magazine "Kino" describes the film as a "rare example of thrift," as it was almost entirely shot on location, with only a fifth filmed in a studio. This allows one to see footage of springtime Kyiv in 1928, which, in its lyricism and attention to natural phenomena, is reminiscent of Mikhail Kaufman's Kinoko film "In the Spring," shot at almost the same time.
The film is preserved in the film archive of the Alexander Dovzhenko National Film Center.
