Based on Chekhov's short story of the same name.
Paramedic Ergunov and two men, Kalashnikov and Merik, are passing the time at an inn. Merik flirts with the landlady's daughter, Lyubka, sharing his dreams of a free life in Kuban. As he leaves, Ergunov, hearing a noise in the yard, realizes his horse is being taken away. The paramedic rushes to the door, but Lyubka blocks his way.
