Plot synopsis
In 1972, the Soviet Union celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of its founding with great pomp and circumstance. The political leadership, under Brezhnev, proclaimed the successes of Soviet socialism and promised the global victory of communism.
Nikolai Svanidze, however, chose to recount this year by evoking the persecuted dissidents and dwelling at length on a life shattered by Soviet power, that of the poet Marina Tsvetaeva, who committed suicide in August 1941 after her husband and daughter were arrested. Thirty years after her death, her work can still only be read in secret.
