The play is presented as a dialogue between Astafieva, a solitary villager, and Tretiakov, a single teacher who came to work at the village school for three years. Now the time has come for him to leave and say goodbye to the people he has come to know, and half an hour before the bus departs, he goes to visit the last person, Astafieva.
