Plot synopsis

This film focuses on 1916 and the last Russian empress, Alexandra Feodorovna. Nikolai Svanidze tells the story of a German woman who deeply loved Russia but was never able to become Russian. He compares her to Catherine the Great, who achieved a similar transformation. But for Alexandra Romanova, life in Russia at the beginning of the 20th century was too great a shock, which she could not survive.
The film tells the story of the relationships within the royal family, how the empress raised her children, and how she communicated with her crowned husband. Particular attention is paid to the religiosity of the empress, who converted to Orthodoxy as an adult. According to the film's director, the Empress's misunderstanding of religious canons led her to become close to strange personalities, including Grigory Rasputin.
The film features the permanent secretary of the French Academy of Sciences, Emmanuelle Carrère d'Encausse, the president of the Chamber of Accounts, Sergei Stepashin, the fashion historian, Alexander Vasiliev, and the director of the Arkhangelskoye Estate Museum, Lyudmila Grineva.
