Plot synopsis
1796. Catherine is ruling Russia for the 34th year already, more and more often returning in her memories to her favourite - the early deceased Prince Potemkin. And anticipating her imminent death, the Empress realises that a very serious problem is brewing in the state. Her native son Paul, who according to the rules of succession must lead the state, does not like his mother, considers her guilty of the death of his father - Emperor Peter Fyodorovich, and intends, having ascended the throne, to destroy everything created by her.
Catherine Alekseevna has to make a difficult decision that will affect the future of Russia. To declare as heir her favourite grandson Alexander Pavlovich, in whom she sees the successor of her deeds, but thereby destroy Paul's life. Or to allow the disastrous for the country rule of her son, before whom Catherine Alexeevna as a mother feels her guilt.
A conspiracy is maturing around the Empress. She is tormented on the one hand by maternal feelings, on the other by the duty of the Empress to choose a better future for her country.
An unexpected meeting with the monk Abel, who is known for his fulfilled prophecies, prompts Catherine to make a decision.
