In the village of Nikolskoye in the Ruzsky district, farmers decided to restore the production of the first natural cheese in the Russian Empire. The tradition of making hard cheese began in 1795. The first cheese, called "Meschersky", was made in the mansion of Prince Meschersky in his estate Lotochino. The sign of the village of Lotochina still depicts a merchant with a wheel of cheese on a board. The prince brought a cheesemaker from Switzerland by the name of Johan Müller, who developed a cheese recipe, founded a cheese-making school and settled in Russia with his family. Today, his descendants have been found; they live and work in the Alps. And make cheese. Very similar to the famous "Meschersky".
