The film is based on a text by Igor Michoukov, a story about the last years of Grand Duke Alexander Nevsky and at the same time an artistic interpretation of historical events. The lyrical text in voice-over, relying on the stylized graphics of the set designer Nikita Kanioukov, creates both an image of Russia in the 12th century and a universal image of a world that is both present and a harbinger of the future.
