Currently, only two populations of gray whales are known to exist. One of them is the Okhotsk-Korean population; in the summer, it migrates to the shelf off northeastern Sakhalin to feed. This specific population once found itself on the brink of total extinction due to whaling. To prevent the species from disappearing, the gray whale is now listed in the Red Book of Russia.
