Investigator Kamyshin visits his friend, Count Karneyev. While on a walk in the forest, Kamyshin, the Count, and his steward, Urbenin, meet the forester's daughter, Olga, a charming nineteen-year-old girl. That same summer, out of poverty and vanity, Olga marries Urbenin, a nobleman, albeit impoverished. However, right during the wedding, she secretly confesses her love to Kamyshin, regretting her decision. Soon, Olga, for selfish reasons, becomes the mistress of a wealthier count; her infidelity drives her husband to alcoholism. During a district society hunting trip, Olga is brutally murdered; before her death, she refuses to name the perpetrator. Her husband is accused of the murder. The one-eyed peasant Kuzma is ready to implicate another man, but someone strangles him in the night. Urbenin is tried and sentenced to hard labor. However, he was not the killer...
