Police inspector Peter Glebsky arrives at a small mountain hotel "At the Dead Mountaineer" after receiving an anonymous letter - the letter warns that a murder will be committed in the hotel. An avalanche that comes down in the evening blocks the only exit from the gorge, and at night Glebsky discovers the body of one of the guests.
