Moscow, 1910. In the house of the second guild merchant, the patriarchal and conservative Fyodor Namolin, his son Kostik returns from St. Petersburg with his wife Liza and another member of their family. To Namolin's horror, his only son has become a socialist, an anarchist, and God knows what else during his studies! Kostik no longer agrees with his father's opinion, defends his point of view and believes that soon life in Russia will completely change. However, this state of affairs is not to the liking of Namolin senior, who is used to the fact that everyone lives as he says. Fyodor is sure that Kostik's new friends are to blame for everything, and is determined to re-educate his son.
