An elderly man, Alexei, whose family no longer wants to take care of him, is placed in a boarding house for the elderly. At that time, the young director Dmitry Munkuev staged a play for the Day of the Elderly. To do this, he conducts a casting among the guests of the boarding house, but cannot decide on the choice of the main character, King Lear. One evening, he meets Alexei and offers him the role of King Lear. Alexei accepts with difficulty and rehearsals begin at the boarding house. During rehearsals, they become closer and the destinies of Lear and the old man Alexei intertwine. This film features real residents of a pension for the elderly and disabled, as well as professional theater and film actors.
