Thomas Gordeiev is the son of a wealthy tsarist bourgeois. He enjoys all the privileges of his condition but has difficulty coping with the spectacle of social misery. He falls in love with a married woman, breaks up with her when he discovers her frivolity and gives himself over to debauchery. When his father dies, he takes over the management of a major grain business. But he does not take care of his business. He is only interested in human relationships. His environment, which despises non-conformists, rejects him. He chooses to break with his peers to live with the disinherited.
