The story of 14-year-old Tamara Yeremenko, who in the winter of 1942 finds herself on the brink of survival in besieged Leningrad. For the first time in several months, a convoy of postal lorries arrives in the city. The Main Post Office is desperately short of people capable of delivering letters. To survive the winter and save her sister, Tamara must deliver six letters and prove that she is fit for the job; only then will she be taken on as a postwoman.
