The measured life of physicist Vladimir Kalyaev changed dramatically following the crash of two fuel oil tankers in the Kerch Strait in December 2024. Hastily leaving his laboratory at Skoltech, he travelled to Anapa as a volunteer to test experimental methods for cleaning up the fuel oil. A group of volunteers quickly gathered around Vladimir, drawn by his boundless energy and enthusiasm. The experimental project was named ‘KB Kalyaev’ – ‘Kalyaev Design Bureau’. After the New Year holidays, Skoltech arranged a secondment for the scientist. Since 28 December, Vladimir has been refining the clean-up technology under conditions of storms, strong winds, a polluted coastline and toxic oil products.
