1833. Bessarabia. The runaway serf Todor and his beloved Yustsha create a detachment of haiduks who rob the rich, landowners and help the poor. A huge reward is placed on his head.
As a result of betrayal, the gendarmes arrest Todor. Staff Captain Vasile Bagdescu, who sympathizes with the Decembrists, organizes Todor's escape from prison. Now he faces a military tribunal and exile to Siberia.
