Born and raised in Shatura, Russia, Alexey He earned a bachelor's degree in documentary filmmaking from the State Institute of Cinematography (VGIK) in Moscow. He holds a master's degree in filmmaking from the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen, Czech Republic. He directs documentaries, fiction, and animated films.
His short film, The Golden Buttons (2020), was selected by the Krakow Film Festival for the European Film Awards. His latest film, an animated short, Father's Letters, is supported by the CNC, the City of Paris, Ciclic, the Grand Est Region, and France TV. The film premiered in Clermont-Ferrand, won Best Animated Film at the Melbourne Film Festival, and has been selected for over 50 festivals worldwide. This film also inspired his first feature-length project, Father's Letters, currently being written and selected for the 2025 Residency.
Alexey has participated in international laboratories and workshops such as the CEE Animation Forum, Euro Connection, IDFA Talent Campus, the VdR-Development Lab, and the Talent Campus at the Fajr International Film Festival.
In early 2025, he will shoot his first live-action short film, Habibi, in Kazakhstan, supported by the Pays de la Loire Region, France TV, and the CNC through its pre-production grant.
